Plan, plan, plan

Warning: You can skip this phase, but it can cost you more time later.

Planning sounds boring and, honestly, a waste of time. But for personal organizers and secretly tidy people, it is a must. Often, professionals ask pictures of their customers home areas to have an idea of the space size and amount of things they own. Thereby, personal organizers can plan how they are going to organize the space.

For cleaning, the same concept is valid. Take a piece of paper, device (or your own mind) and answer these questions:

  • How much time do I have to clean?

  • What room needs special attention? Is it possible to clean it in the appointed time?

  • Do I have the proper products to do it?

With these simple questions, you can start your cleaning action plan phase. Once you answered these inquiries, you can begin with one storage space: a drawer, cabinet, pantry, closet, etc.

If you are confident that:

  • You have enough time

  • The chosen room is doable

  • You have the right products

Proceed to the next phase.

Gather "yourstuff" together

Make sure you:

  • Place all cleaning products, tools and rags near you

  • Choose large boxes to put away your objects*

In this phase, start gathering the items stored in the particular furniture/space you will clean up first. Take the large containers, boxes or bags of your preference and start filling them with the objects of your room, then place them near their original furniture/space; make sure it is in a safe corner, away from potential accidents.

Next, you should take all belongings from the floor, and place them on tables, beds or even inside wardrobes. They should be stored inside your boxes or bags near their corresponding locations, whenever possible.

At this moment, you should have access to every inch (or cm) of the room to be able to clean it.

*Reserve boxes for fragile possessions that need to be put away, to prevent any hazards.

Cleaning process

At last, the third and most crucial part of the process: the cleaning itself. If you are ready to get to work, do not forget to read our special advice below, it can prevent a lot of problems from emerging.

Important recommendations:

  • Please eradicate dusters, they will lift all the dust, and you will have to clean again later

  • If you can use a vacuum cleaner instead of a broom, please do, the same principle explained earlier applies to brooms

  • Check if the products you have are adequate for their corresponding surfaces

  • Instead of spraying directly on furniture, do it on rags/cloths**

  • Start cleaning from top to bottom

  • Choose one section of the room at the time, cleaning it from start to finish

  • Perform circular motions while cleaning to make sure every area is equally reached

By following these steps, you ensure that:

  • Dust from furniture and shelves is properly removed

  • Vacuum cleaner gets into every single space

  • Results last longer

  • Dirt and trace elements that can cause stains, are eliminated

**This principle is specially relevant to different kinds of wood, stone and appliance materials.

Restore your belongings

After cleaning, comes the final step of the process, to restore your belongings back to their original places. Start by picking up each bag and repopulating your furniture and floor with your personal possessions.

This activity should be followed by a treat to yourself, a nice coffee and a warm blanket to get cozy after so much work. Good job!
