Breath

It sounds cliché, but breathing can help you decompress, according to this study, breathing exercises improved "mood and cognition and the physiological response of stress". In this case, it was performed in sessions for a period of 8 weeks, but due to time constraints, practice a quick breathing exercise that can quickly put you back on track.

First, go to a quiet place away from any distractions, close your eyes and think about pleasant things, it can be light, truth, God, whatever you think is good and calming. Then, take a normal breath using your nose, followed by a deep breath.

Great! Now you are ready for a mind change (yup!).

Mindset

If you want to accomplish anything, start by decluttering that mind. Do you have many evil thoughts about how you handle your belongings, and you seem to curse yourself constantly? That comes to an end today, set your mind on your goals with these simple steps:

  • You are precious: don't let bad thinking get into you, the fact that you started this article is only because you are determined to change your lifestyle.

  • Past is past: you can't change what you did yesterday, but you can change your attitude and the decisions you make today. If you didn't do it last week, start on the current one.

  • You don't have to do everything today: please remove that burden from your shoulders, you don't have to declutter your home on a weekend, take time to make progress. Nobody who is successful today did it overnight, everything goes through a process of maturity, your organization is the same thing.

  • Stay positive: you will feel the urge to give up, but if it helps you, listen to some jazz or any other music that is positive (remember to put it on low volume, your neighbors will thank you).

Are you ready for planning? You can do this.

Set your goals

What do you want to see with decluttering? If you have a whiteboard, a blank piece of paper, or some notepad application in your electronic device, write down your main goal(s), the reason(s) behind the clutter-free project.

This goal will guide and motivate you to continue on the project, helping you to stay on track with the organization process. It will also give you a clue on where to start, what is the most important home division to focus on and why.

Begin decluttering in baby steps.

One small space

What can be more overwhelming than anything else is trying to declutter everything at once. Overly cluttered spaces seem too scary to start working on, so pick a small space to start, this can be a small room, cabinet or even drawer. Start where it seems more achievable, even if it will take a little longer than you would like to admit.

Take regular breaks

This tip may sound obvious and repetitive, but most of the time, even when we acknowledge that pauses are essential, it can pass us by, so don't underestimate the power of a good break.

Whenever you feel a task is getting out of control, pause. Even if you leave the mess for a second, remind yourself you will go back to it later, just take a few minutes away and think about something else. It will make the process more bearable while keeping your sanity intact.

Just remember:

  • Breathing helps;

  • Your mindset is what is going to lead you to victory;

  • Your goal(s) will keep your eyes on the finish line;

  • Starting small will preserve your emotional (and physical) wellbeing;

  • Taking regular breaks to decompress will turn out to be pivotal in your decluttering journey.
